Federation President/CEO Job Description

Mission: The Federation serves the interests and well-being of the Central New York Jewish community by ensuring that the vision of Jewish identity and continuity is realized.

Mission:  The Foundation provides donors of all ages with meaningful opportunities to fulfill their philanthropic interests both locally and around the world, according to the traditions and teachings of the Jewish faith.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President/CEO of the Jewish Federation of CNY has overall strategic and operational responsibility for its staff, programs, and fundraising. The President/CEO is also the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Foundation, which has its own board of trustees. He or she must be a passionate advocate for the Jewish community.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Leadership and Management
  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
  • Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Develop, maintain, and support strong boards of both the Federation and the Foundation; serve as ex-officio of each committee; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both local operations as well as for the national rollout.
  • Lead, develop, and retain office management.
  • Ensure effective systems to track campaign progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes that can be communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.
  1. Fundraising
  • Support campaign chair in every possible way
  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion.
  • Continue efforts to increase Donor Advised and Endowment Funds for the benefit of the community.
  1. Communications
  • Focus on supporting the Jewish Observer
  • Continue editorial oversight of the Jewish Observer
  • Select articles for the Jewish Observer along with local editor.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
  • Co-ordinate publicity to support Federation and Foundation activities
  • Publish a Foundation Annual Report.
  1. Programming
  • Manage and plan campaign events with the Campaign Chair
  • Create programs that support the Federation’s mission
  1. Planning
  • Oversee planning for the Annual Campaign for Federation, and Fund development for the Foundation
  • Co-ordinate programming and planning with local organizations


The Federation president/CEO will be thoroughly committed to the Federation’s and Foundation’s mission and should have proven leadership, coaching and management experience.
