JCC: Writer’s Workshop
Whether you are already a writer or newly exploring writing, you won't want to miss the JCC's Writer's Workshop Day. Select which genre you'd like to explore for the day and then learn from a highly lauded local author. Space is limited to 12 people per genre. Lunch included in registration. Memoir: Learn from Dr. Mary Jumbelic, published memoirist of two award-winning books Here, Where Death Delights (2023) and Speak Her Name (2025). In this workshop, learn the processes used by an award-winning author with structured exercises to help frame your own story. Poetry: Onondaga County Poet Laureate, Georgia Popoff will guide you through three phases: 1) Active writing: Several writing prompts will be provided for writing in the moment; 2) Identifying elements to craft effective poems and some key revision strategies leading to that outcome; 3) Sharing of work created in workshop. All levels & ages welcome Short Story: Learn successful methods of "creating your clay" from writer and editor Chris DelGuercio. You will use a variety of these methods to navigate the early construction of a draft for a short fictional piece. These methods include: automatic/subconscious writing, brainstorming, collaboration, sharing, and peer/instructor critique.
