JCC: The World of Chess with Ken Frieden

August 10 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join Ken Frieden, the B.G. Rudolph Professor of Judaic Studies at Syracuse University, as he provides an intimate account of the chess world. In high school, Professor Frieden frequently played chess tournaments in New York City and received an expert rating (2166). After he left home to study at Yale University, he gave up competitive chess for decades and concentrated on literature and philosophy. Now—after publishing numerous articles and books about literature—he is combining literary expertise with a renewed passion for chess, Frieden will analyze literary works by Vladimir Nabokov, Stefan Zweig, and Sally Rooney, as well as the popular Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit (based on a novel by Walter Tevis).
1-hour lecture will be followed by open play.
