Join the JCC Mystery Book Club in March as we discuss Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story and survive this homecoming. |

"Learning Disguised as Play: Children's Music Education in the Terezín Ghetto During the Holocaust" - Dr. Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell '17, G'22 Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell is a proud Syracuse University alumna whose groundbreaking dissertation research focuses on Holocaust music education—specifically examining how children engaged with music while imprisoned in the Terezín ghetto. Her work bridges a critical gap in our understanding of life during this tragic period. Notably, Amanda created educational materials for the Defiant Requiem Foundation, demonstrating her deep commitment to preserving and sharing this important history. Her expertise offers invaluable context for audiences experiencing the Defiant Requiem performance. This talk is part of a series of residency events organized in support of the Syracuse Orchestra and Syracuse University Oratorio Society's performance of Defiant Requiem, making it particularly relevant to your community members and audiences. While the musical activities of adults in Terezín have been well-documented, the musical experiences of children in the ghetto remain largely unexplored. This talk bridges that critical gap in our understanding of life in Theresienstadt. Drawing from her dissertation research, Professor Amanda Greenbacker-Mitchell ’17, G’22 examines the nature of children's music engagement while imprisoned in the Terezín (Theresienstadt) ghetto during the Holocaust between 1941 and 1945. Specifically, she […] |

Shabbat baBayit invites us to step away from the building and return Shabbat to its most timeless setting — the dinner table. On Friday, March 20, 2026, instead of gathering at Temple Concord, we will meet in small groups in congregants’ homes to share Shabbat dinner, conversation, and a brief, home-friendly service together. On this Shabbat, there will be no service at 450 Kimber Road for Temple Concord. Instead, we’ll gather in intimate groups hosted by members of our community. Each home will have a volunteer service leader who will guide a short Shabbat ritual and discussion created by Rabbi & Cantor — simple, meaningful, and accessible to everyone. Join CBS-CS Members for a group discussion on "Heart of a Stranger: An Unlikely Rabbi’s Story of Faith, Identity, and Belonging" by Rabbi Angela Buchdahl. Born in South Korea in 1972 and raised by a Korean Buddhist mother and an Ashkenazi Jewish father in Tacoma, Washington, Buchdahl went on to become the first Asian American ordained as a rabbi and first as a cantor. Her new memoir, Heart of a Stranger: An Unlikely Rabbi’s Story of Faith, Identity, and Belonging, traces that journey, from the embracing Jewish community she grew up in to finding herself the answer to a Jeopardy question (“What is rabbi?”) — and, even more bizarrely, picking up the phone one day to hear a hostage-taking gunman make demands of her as the “chief rabbi of the United States.”

Join the JCC for a screening of the powerful film Four Winters which celebrates the stories of courageous Jewish fighters who, despite unimaginable odds, fought back fiercely against Hitler’s war machine. Although the Nazis seized and murdered millions of Jews during World War II, they failed to capture an estimated 25,000 who escaped into the forests of Eastern Europe. Instead of simply hiding, these young men and women — many of them teenagers — banded together to fight back, carrying out deadly acts of sabotage, staging ambushes, and waging clandestine warfare against the Nazis and their collaborators. Featuring interviews with the last living Partisans and also using rare archival film footage, letters, historic war records, and artifacts from Partisans’ personal collections, the film weaves together many strands to shatter the myth of Jewish passivity. ** Film Screening will be following by Zoomed-in Q&A with director ** |

Join your Temple Concord family for our first night Congregational Pesach Seder on Wednesday, April 1st at 6:00 PM, led by Rabbi Ilan Emanuel and Cantor Kari Siegel Eglash, as we begin the festival the way our tradition intends -- in community, around the table, telling our story. Together we will move through the Haggadah, lift our cups, ask real questions, sing the songs we know by heart, and wrestle with what it means, in this moment, to move from Mitzrayim, from narrowness, toward freedom. A full kosher holiday meal, lovingly prepared and catered by our own Joan and Lon Lowenstein, will be served, featuring all the traditional Seder foods. Registration is required. All are welcome. |
